The Historian's Response
There are many examples of Members of the House, and Continental Congress for that matter, eventually becoming President of the United States. Of the Members listed below, the only Representative that went immediately from the House to the Presidency, despite also being elected to the Senate, was James A. Garfield of Ohio. Representative John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts is significant in that he is the only President who decided to go and serve in the House after his Presidency, despite calls for him to run for Senate and Governor.

4.) James Madison Jr., Member of the Continental Congress (1780-1783, 1787-1788) Member of the US House of Representatives (1789-1797): 4th President of the United States (1809-1817)

5.) James Monroe, Member of the Continental Congress (1783-1786): 5th President of the United States (1817-1825)

6.) John Quincy Adams, Member of the US House of Representatives (1831-1848): 6th President of the United States (1825-1829) ***Only President to have been a member of the House after Presidency***
