The Historian's Response

There has been a long standing tradition of Members of the House and Senate being buried at Arlington. Arlington National Cemetery was established during the Civil War, when in 1864 Union General Montgomery Meigs transformed the former Lee Family property into a military cemetery. By the end of the war over 16,000 soldiers had been buried there. On 31 March 1883, the Federal government purchased the property from Robert E. Lee’s family for $150,000. Since then, Arlington National Cemetery has continued to serve as a burial place of honor for fallen soldiers and those who served the nation. It has since been administered by the Department of the Army, while most other cemeteries are under the auspices of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Including the burial of Senator Edward Kennedy, Arlington National Cemetery holds the remains of 114 U.S. Representatives, 31 U.S. Senators and 11 individuals who served as both Representatives and Senators (a total of 156 Congressmen). Listed below are the names of those who are CURRENTLY known to be interred in Arlington and their positions in Congress (other offices held are not listed here).
