June 2009 Caption

In this photo, taken 9 June 2004, then Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert pays his respects to former President Ronald W. Reagan in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

President Ronald Reagan, elected in the fall of 1980, implemented many reforms and changes as President. One of which was changing the location of Presidential inauguration ceremonies from the East Front of the Capitol to the West Front in 1981 where it has been held ever since. Having struggled with Alzheimer’s disease after his Presidency, he passed away on 5 January 2004. He became the tenth U.S. President to Lie in State in the U.S. Capitol in history after passage of H.CON RES 444 which, “Authorizes the use of the rotunda of the Capitol for the lying in state of the remains of the late Honorable Ronald Wilson Reagan, the fortieth President of the United States.” On 3 June 2009, almost five years since his passing, a statue of President Reagan will be dedicated in the Rotunda of the Capitol and included in the National Statuary Hall collection for the state of California.
