Established in 2006, the House Fellows Program brings together secondary education teachers of American history and government for a week-long intensive institute on the history and practice of the House of Representatives. Each component of the House Fellows Program is designed to help educators improve their knowledge and understanding of the “People’s House.”
Fellows participate in insider briefings by the National Archives, Library of Congress, Congressional Research Service and Architect of the Capitol. They also have the chance to meet their Member’s of Congress and hear from guest speaker Members of the House who offer unique perspectives and insights into the inner operations of the House. The program takes place during various weeks during the summer, particularly when the House is in session voting on key bills.
The Office of the House Historian concluded the summer 2009 Fellows Program on July 31, 2009. We were happy to host 24 teachers this summer from across the country. In 2010, we are looking to expand the program and have additional Fellows participate. Participating Congressional Districts are chosen by seniority. A list of selected Member districts will be posted in the spring of 2010.
